Hi there, hope all is well with you,

I think, dare I say, we are coming to the end of a major cold session which, unbelievably has gone on for five weeks.  Marley my 8 month old  has had it the worst with a terrible hacky cough, lots of phlem and tons of snot, but touch wood I am begining to see the light.  Being so young and not being able to blow his nose, was making night time awful, for everyone and in the morning his nose would just stream, which he would then rub all over his face, in his eyes, everywhere…..until that is I found this amazing gadget called NoseFrida!!! its a nasal aspirator or snot sucker which I call it and you can just vac up the snot, its brilliant!!!! It is a bit gippy as you do have to suck it up with your mouth, but there is a tube and a filter to catch the offending green stuff. Anyway check it out on Amazon, here’s the link, NoseFrida  its effective, hygienic, safe, suitable from birth, BPA and Phathalate Free and it really does work!!! I have also been using a homeopathic liquid extract called Elecampane Coltsfoot Extract!  In case you were wondering, its not a baby horses hoof – its an alchohol free, Holistically Balanced miracle in a bottle!!! Or in my terms a cough blaster!!! (This is made by Natures Answer and can be bought online).

All said and done, cold are viruses and its good to let it runs its course, here are a few tricks I have up my sleeve which might work for you!

  1. At the first sign of a sniffle mix half a pint of fresh apple juice with half a pint of cold water and add 1,000mg of powdered Vitamin C. Let your kiddies drink it throughout the day until the whole jug is gone. For babies under one, you can get Vit C drops.
  2. Give your children a juice boost or smoothie pack full of immune boosting nutrients and antioxidants. ( see my recipe below)
  3. Zinc lozenges can be very useful for boosting the immune system, combating colds and soothing sore throats, zinc drops are available for babies too.
  4. Avoid mucus-forming foods, which tend to thicken and increase mucus. These foods include dairy products, eggs and meat.
  5. Avoid fatty foods too which thicken lymph and encourage a sluggish lymphatic system.
  6. Drink lots of fluids which help thin mucus and prevent a sluggish lymphatic system.
  7. Avoid sugary foods which suppress your child’s immune system, you can use raw honey medicinally.
  8. Echinacea stimulates the immune system and is both antibacterial and antiviral.
  9. Garlic has antibacterial properties and helps detoxify the body.
  10. Give your child elderberry extract which is also antiviral and has been shown to reduce the length of a cold.

Here is my childrens favourite juice boost, which they love warm for poorly throats!

  • 3 organic eating apples peeled and cored
  • a small tin of blackcurrants in juice

You will need a juicer to make these, and this will make about half a pint of juice depending on the size of your apples! they should be drunck straight away to prevent nutrient loss.

I hope this helps you battle your way through snotty children, I would love to hear any tips you ve found to help!

    Hello Claire

I have just stumbled across your blog and i must say its great! there’s not many blogs out there that tackle the nutrition for children topic so i am glad to have found you.
I have been using frozen berries out of season ( and sometimes in season due to cost!) but each time i use them i feel guilty that they are not organic, do the health giving properties of these berries outweigh any potential non organic short comings? i guess this question can be put to any food really, rather than do without would non organic do??
Look forward to your next blog, take care Jx
